Christmas today would not be as jolly as it is before. The season of love, gift giving and camaraderie is overshadowed by the angst of people for their lives money and future. Here, I present to you why.
When I was a kid, my family did not have much. Despite the small income we were happy, contented, and our bellies full every Christmas. The prices of goods were affordable and even low-income families such as us before can have an enjoyable Christmas. Hams, fried chicken, spaghetti fill our table for my family to share.
Now, all of it is a thing of the past. Due to inflation of goods, constant increase in electricity, oil, and other basic needs eat up of our family’s savings. Expensive education fees, the looming threats in our streets, the dysfunctional transportation system takes away the money, energy, and time of our countrymen. Value added tax is also another problem for our people. With 12% of tax in this country and the constant increase of goods and necessities, why cant minimum wage workers have an increase? The people who who works tirelessly for this nation deserves a better lifestyle.
With all of these problems, we could not expect our countrymen to enjoy the Christmas season. When they’re all so busy worrying and wondering how to get by or survive in a daily basis with their minimum wages. We cannot expect them and us to have a merry Christmas. Rather, we can only say that it is a Melancholic Christmas.
