About two months ago, I first heard of a film adaptation of a book entitled “The Darkest Minds,” and it starred one of my favorite actresses, Amandla Stenberg. Of course, I had to watch its trailer, and it immediately caught my interest. What really hooked me, however, is the compelling concept and plotline. The characters, specifically the teenagers, had superpowers, and they were classified into a social stratification based on the danger level of their ability. It definitely fit into my interests when it came to sci-fi plotlines, which is why, without doubt, it quickly became my most-awaited sci-fi film.
Last week, I finally had the chance to watch the film, and all I could say is that I wish I knew then what I know now. Since it was my most-awaited film, my expectations were undeniably quite high. Perhaps they were too high. So there I was, seated in front of our television, ready to be wowed by the movie. The opening came, and I was all ears. It was an exciting and action-packed start – the backstory and the mood were established well, but then when the action died down, so did my interest. The rest of the movie was a mess; the transition from one scene to another was awkwardly done, the pacing slowed down to the point where I started losing track of where the film was headed, and it just became too cheesy and romantic. The soundtrack was so out of place that I almost thought I was watching a chick flick instead of a thriller sci-fi film.
Overall, the film had a promising plotline but a disappointing narration. It lacked a lot of things in different aspects, mostly with the way it was written. For a film that I considered as worth anticipating, The Darkest Minds was a total letdown. It had a lot of potential but failed to reach it. If I knew then what I know now, then I would’ve just read the book instead.
